When Jesus first became conscious in Mary’s womb, when that spark of life first took hold, God the Creator became man.

The incarnation of God as a man is the real Christmas story. This is when an eternal God purposefully allowed Himself to be made mortal, experiencing every aspect of human decay like all humans on Earth. Along with the chaos that surrounds birth and the associated labour pains experienced by the mother, it is the baby who has just gone through the most traumatic experience they will ever have in their life… until death.

It’s a profound moment to reflect upon: the Creator of the cosmos willingly entered the frailty of human existence. As Jesus took His first breath, He became subject to the same realities we all face — hunger, fatigue, pain, and the inner dialogue of human consciousness. That inner voice, so intrinsic to each of us, must have been as vivid for Him as it is for us.

This is where the story ties back to each one of us. From the moment we become conscious, our inner voice begins. This dialogue — or is it a monologue? — that we have in our heads, where we are both speaker and listener, is one of life’s greatest mysteries. It’s as if there are two distinct parts of us, constantly conversing. And yet, this inner voice has been shaped by us and with us from the beginning, known only to ourselves and to God.

That conversation continues unbroken from life into death. Our bodies are temporary vessels for our spirits here on Earth, but when our bodies die, our spirits live on without so much as a blip in reception between the physical and the spiritual realms. The same dialogue you’ve been having since you can remember — it carries on. Eternity began for you the moment you were conceived, and your soul is now a permanent fixture in this cosmos.

What a miracle! And it is with wonder and awe that we look to our Creator and pay homage, giving glory to Him for such an awesome gift: the gift of life, eternal life.

Now that you know you are going to live forever, did you realise that the terms and conditions of this eternity are shaped by the life you choose to live here on Earth? God is not an evil ogre or an angry Zeus, throwing lightning bolts at His enemies and wrongdoers. God is pure love. When you grasp the idea of God as Love, you begin to understand that He does not have the capacity to be anything else but loving. His very nature is love, and anything contrary to that is simply not possible.

When God made the Earth as described in Genesis, everything He made He called “good.” It was a creation designed for us — His favourite creation — to watch over, cultivate, and develop together. It was meant to be a place where we could abide with God here on Earth in the garden. But we wanted autonomy. We used our free will to go against the very God who created us.

Yet God, in His infinite love, made a way for us to mend the broken relationship. Through priests, prophets, and kings, He reached out to humanity. But time and again, we failed. Each attempt at restoration seemed to end in even greater failure. Finally, God came to Earth as a man, as Jesus, experiencing the fullness of human life, from its fragile beginnings to its ultimate end. The inner voice of Jesus, the dialogue within His mind, was as real and profound as the one you experience in your own head.

Some 35 years ago, I had an experience that opened my eyes to the reality of our eternal consciousness. I was sitting on the window seat of a luxury liner bus on my way back from Glasgow to London. My dad was working in London at the time, and I was visiting him after spending a few days with my girlfriend in Scotland. Somewhere between Glasgow and London, on a quiet country road, I felt instantly transported to a different realm. Two male Angels accompanied me to face the Devil. Though they could not intervene, they encouraged and supported me from a distance.

I faced the Devil in a strange confrontation that tested my resolve. Though he tried to intimidate and break me down, he never found a weakness to exploit. The Angels cheered as I returned to them, victorious. When I “woke up,” I was staring at the same stretch of scenery as before as if no time had passed. That experience solidified my belief that our consciousness is never truly “off.” It transcends the boundaries of time and space.

In the creation story, God made everything in the skies, the seas, and the land, calling each day “good.” But when He made man in His own image, He called this creation “very good.” He wants us to experience the joy of His creation now. When Jesus became man, heaven was brought to abide here on Earth. Every act of kindness, every moment of generosity — these are glimpses of heaven touching Earth. Every time you help someone or share your resources, you bring a pocket of heaven into this world.

Forever after started for you the day you became a conscious being. Armed with this insight, will it change how you live your life here on Earth? For me, I believe anything that tethers you to this Earth is a hindrance to true transformation. If you are not anticipating death with a sense of eagerness and excitement about the next chapter of that dialogue in your head, you will miss out on sensing the joy and wonder of the here and now.

Our time here is not about accumulating wealth or possessions but about loving one another and sharing what we have. Imagine a new creation filled with love, care, empathy, compassion, truth, justice, kindness, generosity, tolerance, and grace. Be someone who spreads these pockets of love wherever you go. When these pockets start to overlap, they form communities, and when those communities span the Earth, heaven will have fully touched down on Earth. God will be here among us, just as He planned long ago.

Forever After has already started. Let’s make it a forever that honours Him.
