Standing Time | #MyFridayStory №206

Following a proven recipe step-by-step is a guarantee for success.

It may sound like a no-brainer, but I believe in copying what already works well. Replicating something with a successful track record is far easier than doing something never conceived before. I’m not suggesting not being innovative, in fact, quite the opposite. First, get the basics right, then start challenging the status quo.

Cooking and baking recipes ensure the correct ingredients, quantities and methods, for the best outcome. Of course, adding your flair and culinary skills to a recipe is how you add your signature to the dish. Some recipes are either so basic, or so classic, that changing anything would be a gastronomic disaster.

A classic Italian lasagne recipe calls for “standing time” twice in its preparation. These are times where the dish is left to “mellow.” Leaving out these two seemingly unimportant steps won’t ruin your dish, but the richness of the combined flavours will be lost.

So, while having a tried and tested recipe is an advantage, local knowledge adds flair.

South African adults go to the polls on 1 November 2021, for the sixth democratic elections. Our track record for following a recipe is admirable. Since the dawn of apartheid, white South Africans followed the recipe. Since the dawn of democracy, people of colour in South Africa followed the recipe.

After decades of following one recipe, all the people realised it was a gastronomic disaster. A new recipe was introduced that all the people agreed on. After 3 more decades of gastronomic disasters, all the people go hungry.

It’s time for a new recipe. One that’s tried, tested, and guarantees success. Only this time, we all agree on the dish, the recipe, and we allow for “standing time.

I can’t stop reminding myself — almost 70% of white South Africans voted “Yes” in the 1992 referendum to end apartheid. They agreed it was time for a new recipe. They were excited about the promise of an inclusive future. Finally, released of the burden of the propaganda that informed their forefathers’ actions. Unfortunately, even a great recipe in the wrong hands ends in disaster. To be honest, what started as a great recipe, has ended as a disastrous flop.

Standing time” is imperative in healing our nation. Let’s go back to the basics. Let’s start by stopping at stop streets, not littering, and having respect for each other. Let’s take time together to experience the richness in our diversity. That richness is what adds depth and flavour to our character as a nation. We can find the reconciliation we’ve all needed if we allow for “standing time” to find each other, in the middle.

Have an awesome weekend and please be generous! 😄

As always, thanks for reading 🙏
